> Hello Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone worked in Suzhou International Foreign
Language School in China. I got a decent job offer, but I am not sure yet.
Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Has anybody worked in Daegu English Village (Yeunjin College, Daegu, South Korea)?
I would be very thankful to hear your opinions, both positive and negative.

> I would like to post this for teachers who are considering a position in Egypt with any school, Language Center or Training company. As the Principal of an "American school" (and 14 years living there), I have witnessed certain issues by some private establishment throughout Egypt. Avoid bringing the Police into any disagreement between you and the establishment because, as a foreigner you will not win your case. If you are considering ANY position in Egypt, 1- Get a complete, SIGNED contract that states ALL the conditions outright, nothing verbal, especially in English, (Oh, you didnīt understand the translation), 2- PAY FOR NOTHING UP FRONT, if they want you in this high demand market, let them pay first! 3- Donīt trust ANYTHING verbal. 4- Learn at least a rudimentary Arabic, then you will know what is really going on (donīt say you understand Arabic)
> Entry Level Teachers,
"Looking for employment in our new career". Hang in there, it will come. I know how it feels. I am semi retired and it feels like my lifes acheivements and dedication was for nothing when you notice all the postings that say BA, PHD, and so on. I am for certain going to start my BA. However it does not help the fact that you need a teachers job. Well all we can do is stick to our values and beliefs. I know I am worth 7ooormb in China. I just wish there was a company that only recruits entry level. Guess Iīll just keep praying God takes me in the right direction...Happy Hollidays to All:))
> Working in a government school is really tiring and fascinating. A classroom with 50 students against 1 teacher. Most of the students come from poor families and problems regarding shortage of books, chairs and classroom is a perennial problem. My 18 years experience is full of joy and tears but I cant remember 1 pupil Gr.1 noted for his thief against some student using a toy gun is a clear "hold up" inside the school campus. When I asked about him I found out that he is an orphan and under the care of an 80 year old grandmother who cant afford to give him allowance. So I told him if I give you daily allowance will you stop? And now I give him his daily allowance and he really stopped. I realized then...that the family where he grows up with really makes up a CHILD.
> Are there any job postings that do NOT require one to have a degree? I would like to obtain a degree, and in order for me to do that, I would like to pay off the debt I have accumulated and get back into a school.
I feel that I have enough knowledge, as of course, English is my first and main language. I have worked with children, and have taught (art) before. Please donīt get offended (if you would?,) or shrug this off as "whatever," I just honestly, would like to know. I will obtain a degree, but now, I have to do work that makes a difference in my pay check and othersī lives.
Thank you, Jessica.

> My view is about retired teachers. Most of the Asian countries retire teachers at the age of 60 years. After that these teachers are not accepted for teaching in their respective countries due to one reason or the other. But I have observed that vacancies of teachers are in bulk on web.
It would be appropriate that the experience of these teachers who are in a position to work and in good health should also be given chances to contribute further at international level. In this regard a separate registration directory be established under "SERIOUS ALLIANCE OF TEACHERS & EMLOYERS".
I hope this would help to make use of qualified and experienced teachers at international level. Thank you. Mohammad Naseem-ul-Islam.

> Is it worth getting a TESOL diploma as opposed to just a certificate? We were told if we took the specializatios for teaching TOEFL, Business English etc we could earn more as a tutor in our spare time. I was dismissed from Dasman model school after my 60 day trail period. I was not given any written warning. I was notified that I was to leave the country and I was also told that they were not going to repatriate me or give me a flight home, I had to do that on my own. I also had to give up my apartment as well. The contract I signed clearly states that they would pay for a ticket back home. My passport and ID was cancelled and I was forced to move out of my apartment with no place to go. I had to raise the money to get home on.
While I was there I was placed in a classroom with second graders and told to keep them engaged in learning with no books, materals, worksheets or supplies.

Thank you for the answer.

> Baltic Tourist Shipping Line
I recently responded to an add placed by this company on another website Without interviewing me or initiating any kind of email communication, they have sent me an appointment letter that informs me I should contact a travel agency in Ghana where the cruise originates and make the travel plans. I am told to report by December 20, 2008 to Ghana. I will then be employed for two years at $4,500 per month. Does anyone know anything about this company? A Google search is not productive. > Hello. I have some questions about work permits and residence permits here. If I have a work permit and a residence permit do I still need a work visa? And if I have a work permit and a residence permit do I have to leave the country if my tourist visa expires? > Is a school legitimate when it asks you for the photo section of your passport? This seems strange to me, they already know so much about us with our name, address, degrees etc.
> PICK UP THE PHONE, USE THE NET, CALL AN EMBASSY!
Do not send money to any school in order to get hired. Do some research by using the Internet, call the embassy for the country in question and ask about the business. Run it through Google, Yahoo, and ask other people BEFORE sending anyone any money. Look up the local tax office, police, fire, or licensing bureau in ANY area when you are wondering about a school, etc. This is not rocket science or decoding DNA. Most real teachers are kind people and they want to work and help people.
> Does anyone know anything about The Ministry of Education in the U.A.E? I was offered a job and sent an Employment Letter, but was then asked to pay just under $400 for the visa. I went to the U.A.E. Embassy in London to see if they could check the company out and was informed that it is more than likely a scam company. The salary is extremely good ($4800) and therefore I expect more than a few teachers have parted with their cash. I have done some research on the Internet and the Al Ghadd system is real and therefore if the company is scamming money, they sure have done their homework! My Dad always taught me that if something appears to be too good to be true, then it usually is and therefore I will continue searching for that perfect job
> ESL "Recruiters" & What You Send Them.
DO NOT send your face page of your passport to ANYONE. Be smart about what you send online to people. Many teachers get their IDīs ripped off, or have other problems shortly after applying for a job.
In many cases, people from Nigeria and other areas like China post fake ESL jobs using GMail, Yahoo, or other free mail accounts. Instead, send a general brief and a photo asking them for their details and credentials BEFORE you send them your life story.
If they claim they need your passport to process a visa, that is BS. what is needed is your name, PP#, and other data from the face page, but NOT the actual document in MOST cases. CHECK OUT the school and the "recruiter" first. DUE DILIGENCE!!!

> NON NATIVE TEACHERS? Hi all! I am a non native ESL EFL teacher. I had both my BA and MS on TESOL. I had my MS degree in New York as a Fulbright Scholar. This means that you are verbally promised xyz amount of monthly earnings. Then when your hours are reduced( which they knew before hand) you are left holding the bag. Also, You are responsible for your housing. This results in a $500 deficit just to start working. Hi, after two months of searching for work in several countries, and now sifting through
many offers, I have narrowed my search to Turkey (Istanbul) and Vietnam. I would like to hear
from anyone working in Istanbul and what your experiences are. Any companies to avoid?
I have been there as a tourist and am familiar with Turkish culture. I would like to know more
about the teaching environment, particularly in public schools. I would also appreciate any
comments on the general cost of living and what you think a fair wage is for 25 contact
īhoursī (45 min. each) per week relative to COL.
Thanks very much!

> Greetings from Indonesia!
This is bad, that this site does not allow me to include a website link, because this is exactly what I wanted to do. Since July I have been writing notes about the school where I have a misfortune to work, and I wanted to share these with fellow teachers to warn them, which kind of "schools" they can encounter in Indonesia.
Nevertheless, I will try to type this website address in such a way, that it will be possible to enter it into the browser. It will not work automatically, because it must be cleared from garbage.
The address is: (http)(colon, slash, slash)geocities(dot)com(slash)moscowtime, then there is a link on the page to "Notes about SUB".
The experiences that I had in this school are very close to fantasy of absurd, but it all really happened and is still going on.
Best wishes, teachers, and beware of sweet-mouthed employers...

> Club di Lingua Inglese, Caserta, Italy
I worked for Club di Lingua Inglese for 4 months. The worst job Iīve had since I began teaching EFL. They have little to no resources. In a town that has no English literature (books, magazines, newspapers) at all, this can make planning lessons rather difficult. Marino says in his ad that he will assist you, which is a lie. My first day there, he simply told me to prepare 3-4 lesson plans for that evening. He wouldīnt even tell me the levels, ages, or interests of the students. Marino will also say and do anything to not pay you what he owesyou, including the flight home. I lost more money than I made on this venture. The main reason I left, however, was the sexual harrassment.
> hi to all - i am an indian citizen with mixed parentage. Grandparents -one scottish one dutch. went to a public school and my spoken english is far better than many "native english speakers" . yet there is resistance to employ an indian. India has a few hundred public schools set up during the British time in India. Students from these schools speak excellent english. i can imagine that to quickly shortlist possible candidates it may be best to specify īnative english speakersī but that is flawed. there are two reasons for this - one is you will not attract the best talent available with this narrow definition and secondly the standard of english is not the best in some of these countries ! After ten years in Indonesia I thought I had heard all the *beep* from schools, but GCIS takes the cake. Its too long a story to tell here, just post your email and I will send all the details. Suffice it to say I lost almost 2 juta and 2 good Aussie textbooks I loaned to a teacher there. Probably the most amazing thing was when I took over a Primary One class to help them as they were short of teachers. It was the first day of the new semester and many students didnt have books so I just started playing games like I Spy with them, with a small twist, after the word was guessed they had to write it on the whiteboard. All was going well with words like desk and pencil, but one student spelled table TABEL I corrected the spelling but was immediately told by the Principal that I should not have done so and hadnt I heard of Creative Spelling near enough is good enough. The Principal was an American woman who has been in Indonesia for 2 years, she still didnt realize that the student wasnt being Creative at all, just spelling in Bahasa Indonesia. I wonder what the parents will say when they find out they are paying lots of money for their children to learn to spell in Indonesian and not English. When you teach a young child a mistake, they often carry that mistake for the rest of their lives.

For those wanting to teach in Mongolia itīs safer to turn up in the country with a tourist visa
and find a job in the country after you arrive. I made the mistake of taking a job with SANTIS
before arriving in Mongolia, which I regretted almost immediately, as did alot of other very
good Teachers. Santis state that they pay one of the highest salaries in the country, infact
they are one of the lowest, and the ten days paid vacation they offer fails to mention that you
have to work for the entire year before you will be paid for your vacation.
Here a few of the other options available:

$1000 pm + accomodation.

> First, I would like to say hello to all of the teachers meeting at this site. I have over thirty years experience as a consultant, and Business English Teacher. During my life I have learned that the first rule of negotiations is to never pass the "breaking point" just for the sake of getting a job. If you think about it, there are more jobs than teachers. In fact, those who willingly accept low pay, high hours, and poor conditions, are cutting everyoneīs throats. If you canīt reach a mutually satisfactory agreement, donīt accept the job. There is always another position right around the corner. If enough of us demand a contract that reflects the market, things WILL change.

ONLINE LEARNING THE WAY AHEAD FOR THE GLOBAL EXPERIENCE!
After many enjoyable years teaching EFL-ESP in the Middle East & Asia, it is an exciting prospect to use the internet to reach students worldwide.
Lets hear from others who have used this latest method of teaching.
Several organizations are advertising and it looks to be the way ahead. The advantages are obvious: No travel & visas required for teachers or students, a very short commute and the opportunity to work a schedule that fits in with a family friendly life-style.
Please share your thoughts and experiences........thanks, Chris

> There are two options for a qualification as a TESL Teacher Trainer:
- To train other trainees in school run by a commercial provider, you obviously need to have at least the samwe qualification yourself, perhaps in addition also degree from a recognised university, and certain teaching experience.
- Training other TESL Teacher Training students at more academic level, you certainly will need an advanced degree (Master/Doctorate) from a recognised university in a relevant subject area and preferably some relevant teaching experience.
Commercial providers offer 4-week intensive course TESL teacher training programs, and I do not understand how you can be qualified within such short time. It seems to be a business......
