Details: We are recruiting passionate and energetic teachers dedicated to producing educational outcomes for our students. We are hiring primary school (Grades K-5) English, Math, History, Science, and Computer teachers.
Start Date: August 4, 2014
Length of Contract: 1 year minimum, 2 years preferred
Report to: Principal and Vice Principal
Qualifications
Our teachers are crucial in changing the game for Abigail, Dorcas, Bendu and our 152 other students. Our students must be at the center of EVERY decision we make. In this role, you will be laying the educational foundation for our students. Teaching in general is challenging, but our teachers face additional obstacles. We have 18-year-old students who read on a 1st grade level. We have amazing young women who work all night and come to school tired in the morning. We have students who misbehave in the classroom because our school is the only place where they are allowed to be children. But you will not be alone. Joining our staff means joining a community of people who believe and fight every day to make sure our students can overcome every obstacle in their path.
Liberia has its own unique challenges and developmental history, and we’ll need you to work alongside us and understand our daily challenges. We’ll need you in public taxis, walking down the street, and sitting in local corner cook shops because it is there that you will learn the things no one can ever teach you- the unique reality of Liberia at this very moment in time. THAT is the reality we strive every day to prepare our students to overcome, to reach past. You need to understand it, breathe it, and smell it to be able to succeed in this role.
Key Responsibilities:
◾Ensure the academic success of our students
◾Teach 4-6 hours per day Monday through Friday
◾Teach in your expert content area every day
◾Teach an elective course once or twice a week
◾Cover recess, study hall, and detention duty as necessary
◾Plan, prepare and present lessons that address the needs of the whole ability range within your class
◾Attend all staff meetings
◾Organize the classroom and learning resources and creating displays to encourage a positive learning environment
◾Maintain discipline in the classroom
◾Provide feedback to parents and guardians on a student’s progress at parents’ evenings and other meetings
◾Keep up to date with changes and developments in the structure of the curriculum and adopt curriculum as necessary
◾Organize and take part in school events, outings and activities which may take place on weekends or in the evening
◾Cover detention duty a few times a week
◾Cover recess duty a few times a week
◾Be open to monthly teaching evaluations
◾Refer students with social issues to MTM’s Social Worker and health issues to MTM’s School Nurse
◾Report cases of abuse or neglect to MTM’s Social Worker
◾Model healthy behaviors, coping mechanisms, and decision-making strategies for students
◾Help students understand that they and ONLY they are in control of and responsible for their lives
◾Foster responsibility, accountability, and maturity among our students
Preferred Candidate Qualifications:
◾Believe in the transformative power of education
◾Willing to always use the “best teaching” modules even if it means learning something new
◾Previous experience in West Africa or similar context (past experience in Liberia is a huge advantage)
◾Liberian and West African candidates strongly encouraged to apply
◾Teaching certificate or degree required
◾Minimum of two years teaching experience required
◾Computer proficient and able to utilize Microsoft Word, email, and the internet
◾Eager to teach elective course in area of interest
◾Skilled in developing strong, healthy, and trusting relationships with students
