Perhaps, these are times full of questions: about jobs, a career … expectations?
Perhaps, situations suggest compromises … a something less than excellence?
When darkness calls we need to be aware of our best; seek out the possibilities to be our best, to do our best. If the “magic” of youth’s gone missing, perhaps, it is a purpose to wholly engage you that is absent? Are these not, “The Days’? Are we now not most able … to model excellence in all we do? Why not? How then? It’s said we learn what we need to teach … and teach what we need to learn. Could this engaging purpose … this model for excellence … be some how about teaching?
Today, the world seems in a quandary about America and all things American. One of the outstanding questioners is China. There can be no doubt that this century will mirror how well America and China come to understand each other; how well they enable the world to understand them both. What if we could assist this: model excellence in an Americans Teaching-and-Learning-from Chinese experience?
Would you sign on? Show up to play? Would you bring your best game?
Since China joined the WTO, She has passionately pursued Mastery of English.
Thousands of English speakers come to China each year to teach English to brilliant affluent Chinese minds of all ages, from all walks of life. Ideally, the teaching methods and teachers used would “prison break” these minds from the rote Chinese system of indoctrination into lasting and creative understanding through freely flowing communications, teacher-student give and take learning.
The ultimate purpose being to globalize Chinese minds with the global nature of the English language so that such an awakening might dispel China’s traditional, historically ingrained fear of all things “foreign” culturally and commercially.
Is this not the quintessential use of language, education , communication: no fear?
To date, this has been done somewhat. It is ‘working’. Yet, it can work far better. We would like to define and deliver against a new model of excellence.
We’d like to posit the “American Brand” of being-doing in its most inviting form:
Through our day to day relationships with Chinese students, parents, teachers, businesspersons, government officials we’d like to add a new, more human, real dimension to any Madison Avenue guile’s romancing of “The American Dream”.
It’d feel like a real home run to just be “felt” in China, by the Chinese, as: easy to be with; got your back; tell it like it is; good people: smart, safe, trusted. People-to-people, word-of-mouth diplomacy trumps government to government every time.
Over a private, you-tell-me-your-big-idea-I’ll-tell-you-mine lunch, at the US Consulate in Northeast China, with the US Consul General, the subject was how to enhance the “American Brand” of human interaction in Chinese awareness.
Of course, we considered the altitude American University graduates enjoy in the aspiring minds of Chinese youth.
American graduate as teacher, as people to people diplomats, felt good.
That thought bubbled up into this ideal of an “American Exemplar Corps”: recent graduates drawn to exemplifying American excellence through teaching in China.
The thinking was: rather than the current, ad hoc, willy nilly, random way foreign teachers were identified, recruited, utilized and managed by these Headmasters, why not create a Quality-driven, sane and stable system, in direct concert with China’s Foreign Experts Bureau and the substantial employers of Foreign Experts:
the local esteemed universities, government schools and major corporations?
If, American Bachelors or Masters of Education, English or parallel majors, who were not enjoying the best employment experience stateside; who hoped one day to convert their Bachelors to a Masters or Masters to a Doctorate, could qualify for a two-year internship, structured to provide truly fine credentials from teaching children of all ages and learning capabilities, tutoring for TEFL, SAT, GRE, Adult ESL classes and consulting business managers. Then, all would be synthesized into real grist, some accredited, for a future Masters Thesis or Doctoral Dissertation. To this end, free, well credentialed ideation, writing resources would be available.
The Exemplars, by teaching 60-80 class hours a month, would: earn enough to live comfortably; be able to save 50-70percent; enjoy free, furnished, modern, private accommodations on a pristine campus in the midst of vibrant cities; enjoy an annual bonus, 1 month paid vacation and hours of free Chinese lessons each week. Plus, they could double earnings through tutoring VIPs , consulting businesses.
