Position Summary: The classroom teacher creates a positive learning environment to
facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students. In order to
respond to the individual needs and abilities of students, the classroom instructor must
work closely with other staff, the administration, and other programs. Essential job
functions include those listed below. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Essential Job Functions:
• Implements instructional activities based on standards that contribute to a climate
where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.
• Identifies, selects, and modifies instructional resources to meet the needs of the
students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.
• Assists in assessing changing curricular needs and offers plans for improvement.
• Maintains effective and efficient record keeping procedures.
• Provides a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively
engaged in the learning process.
• Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and
other professionals on a regular basis.
• Collaborates with peers to enhance the instructional environment.
• Models professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents,
peers, and community.
• Ensures that student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate for age
group, subject area, and/or program classification.
• Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships stakeholders.
• Assumes responsibility for meeting school-wide student performance goals.
• Demonstrates gains in student performance.
• Meets professional obligations through efficient work habits such as: meeting
deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating.
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by their supervisor.
All work responsibilities are subject to having performance goals and/or targets
established as part of the annual performance planning process or as the result of
organizational planning.
• Insure that all required policies and procedures of WestCare are carried out.
• Act as a WestCare representative/liaison with other agencies.
• Embrace and embody the mission, vision, guiding principles, clinical vision and
goals of WestCare Foundation.
• Other relevant duties as assigned

Education:
• Bachelor’s degree and completed a state-approved teacher education program from
an accredited college or university;
• Current licensure to teach in North Carolina with current certification in the
appropriate content area(s);
• Two year’s experience;
• Special Education certification a plus.
Essential Qualifications:
• Per North Carolina state regulations, must be at least 21 years of age
• Must be able to communicate effectively (language skills).
• Must have the ability to work with mathematical concepts (mathematical skills).
• Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid
conclusions (reasoning skills).
• Must be physically able to successfully perform the essential functions of the job
(physical demands). Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals
with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
• Self-sufficient and require a minimum of supervision or assistance to aid in the care
and education of students.
• Knowledge of the tools, equipment, tasks and safety procedures used in the
assigned job area.
Working Conditions:
• Tasks may be performed in a classroom setting.
• Fast paced environment.
• Potential for high noise level at times.
• Some transportation of clients required.
• A minimum of 40 hours per week are expected but significantly more hours will be
required from time to time. Completion of job duties may require working before and
after normal working hours. Regular attendance is required. Being able to work as many
hours as is necessary to complete job tasks is a required and essential duty of this
position.

Physical Demands:
• Requires mobility and physical activity: Having an adequate range of body motion
and mobility, to work in an office, residential, or outdoor environment including standing
and walking (even and uneven surfaces), sitting for extended periods of time, bending,
twisting, reaching, balancing, must be able to lift and carry 50+ pounds on occasion, 10+
pounds regularly. Use of computer and telephone systems is required which includes
coordination of eye and hand, and fine manipulation by the hands (typing, writing, and
working with files).
