Program Overview
The first year is hard for any new teacher, and you will work in communities where systemic inequities and individual prejudices have denied too many children access to a great education. To prepare you for that challenge, you will receive intensive pre-service training and coaching through Roots LA.
Roots LA Fellows develop the skills to help students build their knowledge by making meaningful connections between challenging, meaningful content and students’ unique values and experiences.
We are currently seeking outstanding candidates to teach critical-need subjects, including math, science, special education and bilingual. We are especially interested in applicants who grew up in L.A. or attended L.A. public or charter high schools.

We look for accomplished individuals who possess the skills and deep content knowledge to teach critical subjects where great teachers are often in short supply, like science, math, and special education.

Unique Opportunity: Roots LA is the first teacher training program of its kind—offering college juniors in Los Angeles the opportunity to train to become teachers, earn a job offer before heading off into senior year, and earn a $2,250 summer stipend during pre-service training.
Classroom-Centered Training: Our training is radically simple: focused practice on key skills, knowledge, and mindsets to get new teachers off to a strong start. Where traditional teacher preparation leaves little time for hands-on skill-building, our innovative training is centered around actual teaching experience and focused practice on core skills, such as reflecting on students’ values, experiences, and ambitions to create opportunities for students to see themselves in challenging content that will prepare them for success.
Community-Focused: California faces an increasing shortage of qualified teachers to meet students’ needs—and minority communities are bearing the brunt of this shortfall. Roots LA is recruiting and training college-aged Angelenos who want to make a difference in their home communities.
Full Salary and Benefits: Fellows will begin earning a full teacher’s salary, while pursuing certification when they start working full-time at a district or charter school.
Eligibility Requirements
Roots LA provides an accelerated path into teaching. It is specifically designed for L.A.-based college juniors without experience as a licensed teacher.
In order to be eligible to enroll for our summer training in 2019, you must meet the following minimum requirements:
• Current status as an undergraduate college junior on track to graduate by Spring 2020.
• Minimum GPA of 2.5
• Eligible to work in the United States
• Availability to attend summer training from June-July 2019. Upon successful completion of summer training, you will have one year to meet the following requirements in order to be eligible to teach in Fall 2020.
