School Profile
The Abbey College is an international co-educational boarding school based in Malvern, Worcestershire. During the academic year (September to June) we can have up to 100 students, from as many as 20 different countries, aged 13 years plus, studying a variety of courses, including IGCSEs, A Levels and (pre-university) Foundation. The majority of these students live at the College. In addition to this we also run short course groups throughout the year and a residential summer school (100 - 200 students per week) from mid-June to early September.
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will have a keen interest in student welfare, safeguarding and development; have a desire to learn and grow in the role; enjoy working with international students; be customer orientated and performance driven; be enthusiastic and committed with stamina and a positive attitude.
Overview of Role
This is a key role in the College with overall responsibility for the welfare, safety and pastoral care of the students during their stay. In addition to managing the welfare of students the successful candidate will also act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead having overall responsibility for the safeguarding of the students managing any concerns and supporting staff.
The main areas to the role are:
Specifically the Welfare Manager will lead the boarding team to ensure that:
• The staff are aware of the National Standards for Boarding Schools and the ISA criteria and that the College procedures are compliant and operational
• All College Policies are followed
• Dealing promptly and professionally with daily welfare issues and any complaints
• Appropriate, high-quality care is given to all boarders and that the special needs of each group are met
• All boarders have sufficient rest and that bedtime routines appropriate to each age group are maintained
• All paperwork and systems required are organised and ready for College inspections
• All boarding routines are effective
• Students are following the residential rules and oversee discipline as required
• There is clear communication between the boarding and academic staff of the College and take a leading role in the successful operation.
• Parents concerns are addressed quickly, communicated appropriately via the Registrars and that responses follow the College policies
• Regular student feedback is requested and comments acted upon where appropriate
• Manage the cleaning of the College buildings
And ensuring that all staff in cleaning and laundry:
• Read the COSHH manual carefully
• Fill in the daily routine sheet of places cleaned
• Wear any uniform required at all times
• Complete the WC routine check forms
• Pick up clothes and articles from the floor and put on the beds, but do not hang them up
• Report any obvious item/matters against the rules, i.e., boys in girls houses and vice versa, evidence of
drugs, candles, unsafe sockets/electrical goods, students in bed, etc
• Report any maintenance matters
• Challenge anyone not recognised
• Follow any cleaning schedule given
• Manage/aid in the emptying of houses at agreed times
• Report any signs of student distress, unhappiness or illness to a suitable person
• Are the ‘on duty’ person in under 18 houses at agreed times
• Are an initial point of contact for any student who approaches them with issues, complaints, problems or
disclosures
And ensure that all maintenance staff:
• Read the COSHH manual carefully
• Respond to repair log
• Carry out necessary repairs timely
• Check that all repair work meets the standards required for the students
The DSL role is to:
• work with the Senior Leadership Team and Governing Body to ensure that the setting or college’s safeguarding policy is updated and renewed annually and that all members of staff have had the necessary training should a referral be required
• provide regular briefings and updates at staff, management and governor meetings to help ensure that everyone is kept up to date on latest policy developments and reminded of their responsibilities
• ensure that safeguarding policy is available publicly and that parents are aware of the policy and that schools may make referrals to children’s social care if there are concerns
• link with the safeguarding partner arrangements to make sure staff are aware of any training opportunities and the latest local policies on local safeguarding arrangements
The Pastoral role is to:
• Developing plans for student care based on assessment, interventions, identification of outcomes.
