Echo English. I'd like to encourage teachers to record their experiences of working for Echo English. Echo English are refusing to release my documents which means I have been unable to transfer my visa and take up a desirable position in Shanghai when my contract ends on June 30. They regularly take 60% of the salary a school is offering. For example if you receive 7k rmb they are taking 11k rmb of an 18k salary. You may also find that when you arrive a school has not been assigned to you. I was promised a school in central Hangzhou but I'm 18km and a 90 minutes bus ride away, there is no subway.

At the risk of repetition I’ll say it again and again and again . . . If you’re going to get involved with businesses, which is what these so-called language ‘schools’ are, complete with a cash register at the door; just as you are chasing the dollar, so are they and invariably at your expense. If you have the right qualifications and documents, it’s always far safer to take a lower salary (and working hours), in state schools which have a reputation to uphold and are more likely to be regularly monitored by SAFEA. All the problems foreign teachers have arise from these private ‘schools’. If you have a choice, stay away from them! I hope you got your problems sorted out Gary and good luck.

That sounds like a nightmare. Is their someone in the Chinese government that you can speak to for help?

Same process as a regular school: file complaint at the PSB and local SAFEA office. If you're terminated they must release all docs immediately. As a side note English programs like Echo English, WEB International, English First, Wall Street English, as well as schools who copy names of famous Universities like Stanford or Oxford are considered a joke by the local populace in China. "Chain" English "training centers" are a horror for their treatment of teachers.

previous commentator is right. as long as you have not breached your contract or broken any laws, threatening the school with PSB usually does the trick. I know. I did it.
